Short answer: most embassies ask for a flight itinerary or reservation, not a fully paid ticket. Many consulates explicitly advise you not to buy non-refundable tickets before your visa is approved. Some countries and airlines, however, need proof they can verify — so match the document to the requirement.
The three options, side by side
| Flight itinerary / dummy ticket | Held reservation (PNR) | Paid ticket | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A document showing your planned flights | A booking held in an airline system for a short time | A purchased, issued ticket |
| Verifiable with airline | No | Yes, until it expires (often 24–72 h, sometimes longer) | Yes |
| Typical cost | Low | Service fee | Full fare |
| Risk if visa refused | None | None | You may lose money |
| Best for | Planning and applications that ask for an itinerary | When a verifiable booking is requested | When you are already certain to travel |
What embassies usually ask for
- Schengen: a round-trip reservation or itinerary showing entry and exit dates. Consulates generally recommend not purchasing tickets before a decision.
- United States (B1/B2): a travel itinerary is not mandatory for the DS-160, but a clear plan helps you answer interview questions consistently.
- United Kingdom: GOV.UK advises you not to book travel until you have your visa decision; an outline itinerary is enough.
- Onward travel at the border: airlines and immigration in countries like Thailand, the Philippines or Indonesia may ask to see an onward flight at check-in — sometimes they verify it.
How to choose
- Read the exact wording on your embassy or visa centre checklist: “itinerary”, “reservation” and “confirmed ticket” are not the same.
- If the requirement says “itinerary” or “reservation”, a clear itinerary with consistent dates is usually what they want.
- If they say a booking must be verifiable or confirmed, use a held reservation or a refundable fare.
- Keep every document consistent: flights, hotel dates and cover letter should tell the same story.
Where Preplity fits
Preplity generates clean flight itinerary documents in the style of major airlines, with live preview and instant PDF. It does not hold seats with an airline. Use it to plan and present your itinerary; where a verifiable booking is required, book a refundable fare. Create one with the flight ticket generator, and pair it with a matching hotel reservation.
