US Visa Interview Questions (B1/B2) and How to Answer Them

The questions consular officers ask most often at B1/B2 interviews, grouped by topic, with guidance on short, consistent answers.

Remember: under section 214(b) of U.S. immigration law, consular officers presume visitor visa applicants intend to immigrate until they show otherwise. Your answers should be short, honest and consistent with your DS-160.

Purpose of the trip

  • What is the purpose of your trip?
  • Why now? Why this length of stay?
  • Which cities will you visit? Where will you stay?

How to answer: one or two sentences with specifics. Know your dates and accommodation — a clear itinerary and hotel plan help you stay consistent.

Work, study and finances

  • What do you do for work? How long have you worked there?
  • What is your monthly salary?
  • Who is paying for the trip?

How to answer: state facts. Bring genuine documents that support them (employment letter, pay slips, real bank statements) but only show them if asked.

Ties to your home country

  • Why will you return?
  • Do you have family, property or a job waiting for you?
  • Have you travelled internationally before?

US connections

  • Do you have relatives in the United States? What is their status?
  • Have you ever been refused a US visa?

Interview tips

  1. Answer only what is asked, briefly.
  2. Everything must match your DS-160.
  3. Never provide false information or documents — misrepresentation can lead to a permanent bar.
  4. Check the current fee and appointment rules before you go; they change.
